Friday, July 17th, 2009Just what is the value of some unbridled creativity to your brand or product? Would you believe 500% profit?
A couple of hipsters set out to prove it true, and they demonstrate so with this low budget video of their exploits.
500% profit. Pure creativity.
United Airlines - Too Little, Too Late
Monday, July 13th, 2009Update #3 on the United Airlines Breaks Guitars Fiasco. In the face of a huge online backlash, United will donate $3,000 to the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz for music education for kids.
Yeah, that should definitely be tagged as too little, too late after 500,000 YouTube views and coverage on CNN.
Word is that the Sons of Maxwell will play their tune on the Letterman Show.
Hey United - the Web moves fast. You should move faster.
Print efficiency from DDB
Monday, July 13th, 2009As a copywriter, I love ads that yank all the words out. DDB London needed to convey the efficiency of Volkswagen’s range of cars. So they did it in the most efficient way. (From www.bestadsontv.com)

United Breaks Guitars Goes Global
Thursday, July 9th, 2009FOLLOW UP: The Sons of Maxwell are pretty nice, gentle guys. But don’t piss them off. The “United Breaks Guitars” tune created because of a horrible experience with United Airlines has gone global. Check it:
As of Wednesday evening, that song, “United Breaks Guitars,” was the most popular music video on YouTube with about 150,000 views, and to his shock, his phone rang and rang and rang all day, with calls from across the continent.
One minute it was CBS asking him to play the network’s morning show, the next it was CNN, asking for details about his story so he could be featured on “The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer.”
What started off as a lark has turned into far more exposure than Carroll has ever had with his band Sons of Maxwell, the kind of publicity he could never afford to buy, he said in an interview.
See the rest at CTV.
Lesson for businesses - in the social media world, it only takes one pissed off customer to do some serious damage. And hey United, pay for the damn guitar you broke.
United Breaks Guitars
Wednesday, July 8th, 2009Here’s a great cautionary tale on the power of online word-of-mouth. The excellent - yet only Halifamous - band Sons of Maxwell had a guitar broken by United Airlines which, being a big bad airline, did nothing about it. But revenge sounds good. Check out this clip - over 130,000 other people have. That’s a huge and growing number of negative brand impressions for one guitar. Rock on.
Inventing Cool - Kite Boarding in New Brunswick
Wednesday, July 8th, 2009
Check out this coverage from ABC news about things to do on the July 4th weekend.
Featured prominently is kite boarding on New Brunswick’s Acadian Peninsula. This is an example of what happens when a core group of people mobilize to spread the word. I’ve discussed this with my friend Roch Chiasson from Caraquet. He tells me that the ever-changing wind conditions make this one of the best places in the world for kite boarding. About 10 years ago, he and a few of his kite boarding friends decided to spread the word, to evangelize about it. They started with a web strategy that has evolved into a comprehensive social media effort coupled with kite boarding events.
The results? New Brunswick’s Acadian Peninsula is now known as one of the top 3 kite boarding destinations in the world and will host the World Cup of kite boarding this fall.
Mad props to Roch and friends for attracting more eyeballs, more tourists and inventing a cool new product for New Brunswick.
Not so new tune…that I really enjoy
Friday, July 3rd, 2009Yes…I’ve been slack in my music recommendations lately. But…I’ve been singing this song for about two months now and thought - stop being so slack and POST IT! So, here it is: Day ‘N’ Nite by Kid Cudi.
This song is great. The lyrics are simple, yet they draw you in. And, I have to say that I really enjoy the live action coupled with animation within the video. This has been a constant on my iPod and for me is probably one of the underdog songs of the summer.
Enjoy it this weekend as you bop around town.
Designing the Stop Sign
