Benedict Arnold journal discovered in Saint John, New Brunswick
SAINT JOHN: A centuries-old journal appearing to belong to the infamous American traitor Benedict Arnold was discovered last week in a heritage building in Saint John, New Brunswick Canada.
“The inside cover of the book is inscribed with the name Brigadier General Benedict Arnold,” says Derek Riedle, the building’s owner. “It’s a fascinating read.”
Riedle says the upper stories of his Prince William Street property are being renovated, and that’s how the book was discovered.
“One of our contractors found it when he pulled up some old floorboards,” Riedle says. “And I pretty much went directly to the Internet to find out more.”
After fleeing the United States, Benedict Arnold sought the protection of the British Army. He fought for the British in a few battles prior to the end of the Revolutionary War, and then retired to England. An entrepreneur and a sailor, he soon returned to the colonies, settling with his wife and children in Saint John, where he built a thriving mercantile business and established trading ties with the West Indies.
“This is one of American history’s most interesting characters,” says Riedle. “The journal describes the day to day life of Saint John’s earliest days, and recounts some of his most bitter memories. It’s quite amazing.”
The next step for Riedle is authentication.
“If this is the real deal, it needs to be preserved,” he says. “It’s something that belongs in a museum.”
